I am really good at problem solving. I took the time to look at my past successes in my business career. In the almost 20 years I’ve been working, I noticed something. I excelled most in situations where a company had a problem (broken website, broken process, broken team, etc.) and needed someone to come help make it right.
I can architect huge solutions with no technical direction from management, but that doesn’t really float my boat. I realize why now. It’s because I will be making decisions that you will be forced to live with for possibly several years. I’m not sure I’m comfortable dictating what you want to support as a business for many years to come. Like I said, I can and have, but my heart isn’t really there. In my mind, it’s your job to decide and my job to execute.
What gets me excited is helping relieve pain points that exist in your business vs possibly creating pain points for your business down the road. I can’t predict the future any more than you can. Whatever tech is hot this month/year, may be stale and out of style in 2 or 3 years.
Like any geek, I prefer working with certain technologies. They would be Apple’s iOS (iPhone/iPad) platform and Adobe’s Flash (Flash, Flex, AIR) platform.
However, I’ve had much success in fixing problems with technologies I’ve never worked on before. I’ve found that different technologies have different syntax, but sadly, the underlying problem of human thought tends to be the same. I even had a temp job where I “fixed” a problem in a manual hand written system. I did this by figuring out how the person (who was no longer there) thought about things when she started her job and how that process evolved over time. In that situation, I saved the company a lot of money by rectifying her poor record keeping.
I’m good at solving problems, it’s my knack. If you have a problem that needs solving, let me know about it by emailing me. If it’s something I can help with, I’ll let you know.
